ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Host (network)

A host is like your very own special house or apartment that you live in, but in the world of computers and the internet. Just like how you have your own bed to sleep in and your own toys to play with at home, a host has its own computer or device that it uses to do things on the internet.

Now imagine that all of your friends also have their own special houses, just like you. Sometimes you want to play with your friends and do things together. For that, you need to go to your friend's house and knock on their door. In the same way, when your computer wants to talk to another computer on the internet, it needs to find the "door" of that computer. This "door" is called an IP address.

So, a host is any computer or device that has its own IP address and is connected to the internet. It uses this IP address to communicate with other computers or devices on the internet, just like how you use your address and phone number to communicate with your friends.

Finally, just like how you have rules in your house that you need to follow, hosts also have rules that they need to follow when using the internet. These rules are called protocols and they make sure that communication between different hosts on the internet is safe and efficient.
