ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Human bycatch

Hello kiddo, do you know what bycatch is? Well, when fishermen go out to catch fish, sometimes they catch other sea creatures that they didn't mean to catch, like turtles, dolphins, or sharks. This is called bycatch.

Now, let's talk about human bycatch. It happens when people are also accidentally caught by fishermen. They can either be fishermen themselves who get entangled in nets and equipment, or people who work in fish processing plants and accidentally get caught in machines or fall into water tanks while working. This can happen because safety measures weren't in place, or because people were not properly trained.

Just like with fish, human bycatch can have negative consequences. It can result in injuries or even death for the people involved. It can also have an emotional impact on families and communities. That's why it's important for fishermen and fish processing plants to have safety measures in place and to train their workers properly, so that accidents and human bycatch can be avoided.

I hope that makes sense, kiddo!
