ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Legality of recording by civilians

So, you know how we can use our phones or cameras to take pictures or videos of things we like or want to remember, like our family and pets? Well, sometimes people use them to record things that are happening around them, like on the street or in a store.

But, just like there are rules for taking pictures and videos of people, there are rules for recording things that are happening around us. These rules may change depending on where we are and what we are recording.

For example, sometimes it is okay to record things happening in a public place because there is no expectation of privacy. But, in some places, like a bathroom or someone's house, it's not okay to record anything without permission because those places are private.

There are also rules about recording people without their consent. In some places, it's okay to record someone if they are in a public place and they don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy, like a celebrity walking in the street. But, in other places, we can't record someone's voice or image without their consent, even if they are in a public place.

It's important to remember that recording someone without their permission can also be considered an invasion of privacy, which is against the law. So, before recording anything, always make sure to know the laws and respect people's privacy.
