ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Humanum Genus

So, you know how there are different types of animals, like cats, dogs, and squirrels? Well, there is a type of animal called humans, and the scientific name for humans is "Homo Sapiens."

Now, a long time ago, there were different types of humans, just like how there are different types of animals. One of these types of humans was called "Homo erectus," which means "upright man." They were our ancestors who lived a long, long time ago and were some of the first humans to walk on two legs like we do today.

Another type of human was called "Homo neanderthalensis," or just "Neanderthals" for short. They lived a long time ago too, and they were really good at making tools and hunting. But eventually, they died out, and we humans today are the only remaining type of human.

All of the different types of humans are part of a group called "humanum genus." This just means that they are all related to each other, sort of like how different breeds of dogs are all still dogs. Even though we may look different, we are all part of the same family, the humanum genus.
