ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hydrogen halide

Okay kiddo, let me explain hydrogen halide to you. Do you know what atoms are? They are tiny little things that make up everything around us. Some atoms like to stick together to make bigger things called molecules.

Hydrogen halides are molecules made up of a hydrogen atom and a halogen atom. Halogens are atoms like chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and iodine.

Now here's the interesting part. When hydrogen and a halogen stick together, they form a really strong bond. This bond is so strong that sometimes the molecule can easily break apart and release a hydrogen ion and a halide ion. Ions are like atoms that have either lost or gained an electron.

For example, if we break apart hydrogen chloride (a hydrogen halide made up of hydrogen and chlorine atoms), it will release a hydrogen ion (H+) and a chloride ion (Cl-). This process is called dissociation.

Hydrogen halides are important in many chemical reactions. Sometimes they are used as acids, which can donate hydrogen ions. They can also be used in making things like plastics and medicines.

So, hydrogen halides are molecules made up of hydrogen and a halogen atom that can break apart and release a hydrogen ion and halide ion through dissociation. They are important in many chemical reactions and can be used to make different things.
