IPA pulmonic consonant chart with audio

Okay kiddo, so first we have to talk about consonants. Do you know what those are? They're sounds that we make by using our mouth and throat to block or shape the air coming out of our lungs.

Now, some consonants are made by using our vocal cords to vibrate - these are called voiced consonants. Others are made without the vibration - these are called voiceless consonants.

The IPA pulmonic consonant chart is a really fancy chart that helps us understand and group all the different consonant sounds in the world. It's kinda like a big family tree for consonants!

The chart has a bunch of little boxes that each represent one sound. These boxes are split up into different sections based on how we make the sound. For example, the top section has sounds we make by blocking the air with our lips - like the "p" sound in "pop."

The chart also shows us if each sound is voiced or voiceless, and if it's made in the front or back of our mouth, or with our lips or tongue.

But just looking at the chart doesn't give us the full picture - we need to hear what each sound actually sounds like! So, some smart people recorded someone saying each sound in the chart, and you can click on each box to listen to the sound.

So by using the IPA pulmonic consonant chart with audio, we can learn all about how every single consonant sound is made, and even practice making them ourselves! Pretty cool, right?
