ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Idiom (language structure)

An idiom is a way of saying something that doesn't really make sense if you take the words at face value. It's like a secret code that only people who speak the same language understand.

For example, if someone says "break a leg" before a performance, it doesn't mean they want the person to actually break their leg! It's just a way of saying "good luck."

Idioms can be tricky for people who are learning a new language, because you can't always guess what they mean just by looking at the words. But once you learn them, they can make your language skills sound more natural and fluent.
