ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Illeism

Have you ever heard someone talking about themselves in third person, like saying "Billy wants a cookie" instead of "I want a cookie"? That's called illeism.

It's when someone refers to themselves by their own name or a pronoun other than "I". It might seem a little strange, but some people do it because they feel like it helps them distance themselves from their emotions or thoughts.

For example, if someone is feeling really angry, they might say "Jack is really mad right now" instead of "I'm really mad right now". It can also be a way for someone to assert power or authority, like a king referring to themselves in the third person.

Overall, illeism is just a way of talking about yourself that some people find helpful or interesting.
