ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

In the Beginning... Was the Command Line

In the beginning, there was something called a command line. It's a way for people to talk to computers and tell them what to do by typing in words and letters. It's kind of like talking to a robot and telling it what to do.

Before computers had fancy graphics and pretty icons, people would use the command line to do everything on their computer. This means they would type in things like "open file" or "delete folder" instead of clicking on icons with a mouse.

Nowadays, most people use a graphical interface to talk to their computers, but some programmers and power users still use the command line because it's quick and powerful. And even though it may seem old-fashioned, the command line is still an important tool for people who work with computers every day.
