In vitro fertilization

In vitro fertilization is a fancy way of making a baby outside of a woman's body.

First, a doctor gives a woman some special medicine to help her make lots of eggs. Normally, she only makes one egg each month. But with the medicine, she can make many more.

Next, the doctor takes the eggs out of the woman's body using a tiny tube. Then, the eggs are mixed with sperm from a man. This man is usually the woman's partner or a donor.

This mixture of eggs and sperm is called an embryo. The embryos grow in a special dish that has all the things a baby needs to grow. They usually stay in there for a few days.

After that, the doctor picks the best embryos and puts them back inside the woman's body. This is called an embryo transfer. If an embryo attaches to the uterus and keeps growing, it can become a baby!

IVF is a special way to help people who can't have babies in the usual way. It can be a lot of work, but it can also be a big help for families who want to have children.
