Indian indenture system

A long long time ago, some people in India wanted to get a job and make money to support their families. But there weren't many jobs available in India, so some people went far away to other countries to work.

But it wasn't easy to just go work in another country. There were different laws and rules that they had to follow. So some rich people in the other countries made a deal with the British government in India. They said they wanted to hire people from India to come work for them, and the British government agreed to help them.

The rich people in the other countries paid for the people to travel from India to their country. But when the people got there, they were told they had to work for the rich people for five years or more before they could go back home. They had to sign a paper that said they agreed to work for the rich people until their time was up.

This was called the Indian Indenture System. It meant that the people were like slaves – they had to work for the rich people for a long time without any choice. They were treated very poorly sometimes, and didn't have much say in their own lives.

It was a sad time for people from India who wanted to find work and support their families. But eventually, after many years, the Indian Indenture System was abolished and people were free to travel and work without being forced to stay for a long time.
