ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Infant cognitive development

Infant cognitive development is how babies grow and learn to understand the world around them.

When babies are first born, they can't do much but cry, sleep, and eat. As they grow and their brains develop, they begin to learn and understand more about their environment.

Babies use their senses to explore and learn, such as looking at things, listening to sounds, and feeling textures. They also develop motor skills, learning to reach, grasp, crawl, and eventually walk.

As they get older, babies start to understand cause and effect, such as realizing that pressing a button makes a toy light up or make noise. They begin to recognize familiar faces and objects, and can even anticipate certain events or routines, like knowing that bedtime comes after a bath.

One of the most important skills babies develop is language - they listen to sounds and eventually start to learn words and how to communicate with others.

All of these skills and experiences build on each other as babies grow and learn more about the world.
