ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Intergalactic medium

The intergalactic medium is a big space in between galaxies, kind of like the "blank" spaces in a coloring book. It's filled with gas, dust, and other small particles. Just like how your house is filled with air you breathe in, this space is filled with gas that helps keep everything in place.

Sometimes, there are little tiny pieces of matter in the intergalactic medium that form together and make new galaxies! But there are also other things in this space like radiation, which is like sunshine, but coming from space. This can cause the gas in this space to heat up and move around, like a big cosmic dance party!

Scientists study the intergalactic medium because it helps them understand how the universe formed, and how everything is connected. It's kind of like a big puzzle. By learning about the intergalactic medium, scientists can learn more about how the universe works and how everything is put together.
