ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Internalism and externalism

Internalism and externalism are two different ways of looking at what it means to know something.

Internalism is when you believe that if you know something, it's because you have some sort of that knowledge inside you. This could be because you studied it, or because someone taught it to you.

Externalism is when you believe that you know something because it's out there in the world, and that you just need to be able to access it. For example, you can know a fact like "the capital of France is Paris" without needing to have someone teach it to you, because the knowledge is out there in the world and you can just look it up.
