ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Inverter (logic gate)

An inverter is like a magic trick! You know how sometimes you can say the opposite of what you mean and it's funny? Well, an inverter does that with electricity. It takes a signal that says "on" and makes it "off", or a signal that says "off" and makes it "on". It flips the signal like a pancake!

It's made up of a little door with two switches on it. When the switch on the top is pushed, electricity can go through and get to the other side. When the switch on the bottom is pushed, the electricity is stopped from going through.

But, the cool part is that the switches can flip back and forth really fast based on signals that tell it what to do. So if it gets an "on" signal, it will switch the top switch off and the bottom switch on, making the electricity stop. And if it gets an "off" signal, it will switch the bottom switch off and the top switch on, letting the electricity through.

This trick is really useful in computers and electronics because it helps us understand how to make them work by controlling the flow of electricity.
