ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Iolo Morganwg

Iolo Morganwg was a man who lived in Wales a long time ago. He was born in 1747 and died in 1826. He was a poet, a teacher, and a storyteller. But that's not all he did!

Iolo Morganwg was also a very important person for the Welsh language and Welsh culture. He wanted people in Wales to be proud of their history and their traditions. One thing he did was to collect old Welsh stories and songs and write them down so that they would not be forgotten. He also created new poems and songs in Welsh himself.

But that's still not all he did! Iolo Morganwg also helped to create something called the National Eisteddfod. This is a big festival that takes place every year in Wales. People come from all over Wales to compete in things like singing, poetry, and story-telling. It's a lot of fun!

Iolo Morganwg was a very smart man, but some people didn't always agree with everything he did. Some people thought he made up some of the old stories and songs he wrote down. They also thought he made up some of the traditions and ways of doing things. We don't really know for sure if he did or not, but he was still important for helping to keep Welsh culture alive.

So in short, Iolo Morganwg was a Welsh poet, teacher, and storyteller who helped to keep Welsh culture and traditions alive. He collected old Welsh stories and songs, wrote his own poems and songs in Welsh, and helped to create the National Eisteddfod. Some people think he made some things up, but he's still an important figure in Welsh history.
