ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ionian mode

Hey kiddo! So, you know how you like to sing different notes when you play on your toy keyboard or when you hear your favorite songs on the radio? Well, sometimes these notes can sound really good together and that's where modes come in.

Now, Ionian mode is a type of mode that is used a lot in music. It's also sometimes called the major scale. It's kind of like a special pattern of notes that makes everything sound happy and upbeat!

Imagine we have a big piano and we want to play the Ionian mode. It goes like this: we start with the note "C" and we play the next seven notes in a special pattern (half steps and whole steps). So the notes we would play are: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B, and then we would end on another C.

If we played all of those notes one after the other, it would sound like a happy and uplifting melody! You can try it out on your toy keyboard and see how it sounds.

So that's basically what Ionian mode is! A special pattern of notes that sound really good and make us feel happy. It's used a lot in all kinds of music, from pop songs to classical music. Pretty cool, right?
