ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Iron star

An iron star is like a really, really old star that has used up all of its fuel which is kind of like the gas that makes a car go. Once the fuel is used up, the star's core gets very hot and squeezes together really tightly. This squeezes the electrons and the protons together so much that they become neutrons, which are like super heavy particles.

Now imagine your room is really messy and you want to clean it up. You start picking up your toys and putting them in a container, but eventually the container gets too full and you can't fit any more toys in it. This is kind of like what happens with an iron star - the neutrons are all squished together so tightly that there's no more room for anything else.

This type of star is called an iron star because all of the material inside the star has turned into iron, which is a very heavy metal. Since there's no fuel left to burn, the star can't make any more energy, which means it can't shine anymore like it used to.

Overall, an iron star is an old star that has used up all of its fuel, collapsed down to a very small size, and turned into a ball of super dense iron with no more energy to give off.
