ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Isomerization

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with toy blocks that are all square, but you can rearrange them in different ways to make different shapes? That's kind of like isomerization!

In science, isomerization is when we take one molecule (which is like a group of atoms stuck together like those blocks) and rearrange those atoms so that the molecule looks different. Just like you can use those toy blocks to make a square, a rectangle, or even a tower, scientists can use different methods to turn one molecule into a different shape.

Sometimes these new shapes have different properties than the original molecule. Like when you build a tower out of your toy blocks, it's taller than a single block and can even stand on its own! These molecular changes can be very useful in lots of different industries, like making drugs or creating new materials.

So, that's isomerization! It's like building something new by rearranging the building blocks (or, in this case, rearranging the atoms in a molecule).
