ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jacobite consorts

Okay, imagine there was a king named James who ruled over a kingdom. His family, called the Jacobites, believed that they should be in charge of the kingdom instead of the people who were in charge at the time.

Now, a consort is someone who is married to the king or queen but they are not the ruler themselves. So, a Jacobite consort would be someone who was married to the king but also believed that the Jacobites should be in charge instead.

Think of it like if you were playing a game and you wanted to be the leader of the game, but someone else was already the leader. You might get your friend to help you by being your "consort" and working with you to become the new leader of the game.

In real life, Jacobite consorts were often very supportive of their husbands and believed in their family's claim to the throne. Some even helped plan rebellions to try and take control of the kingdom. But, even though they were married to the king, they still didn't have any real power unless their husband succeeded in taking over.
