ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Japan's non-nuclear weapons policy

So, you know how some countries have big bombs called nuclear weapons that can cause a lot of damage and hurt a lot of people? Japan is a country that used to have them, but they decided that they didn't want them anymore.

Instead of having nuclear weapons, Japan made a policy (which means a set of rules) to only have regular weapons, like guns and tanks, that can still protect their country but won't cause as much damage as nuclear weapons.

The reason Japan made this policy is because they know how scary and dangerous nuclear weapons can be. They saw firsthand what happened when the United States dropped atomic bombs on two cities in Japan during World War II. Many innocent people were killed, and the cities were destroyed.

So, Japan decided that they didn't want to ever use nuclear weapons or be part of nuclear wars. They want to promote peace and diplomacy (which means talking to other countries instead of fighting them) instead of violence.

And that's why Japan has a non-nuclear weapons policy!
