Jesse Hartley was a man who lived a long time ago in England. He was in charge of making sure that the ships that came to the port were safe and had a place to park (dock) so they could unload their goods. He designed a new way of building docks called the "wet dock system." This meant that ships could come into the port and park in a big water-filled area that was designed to keep them safe from the rough waves of the ocean. The wet dock system also had special gates that could be opened and closed to control the water level, so the ships could easily come in and out of the docks. Thanks to Jesse Hartley's innovation, the port in England became a very busy and important place for trade and commerce.
