ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Juukan Gorge

Juukan Gorge is a very special place in Australia where Indigenous people used to live many, many years ago. They had their own special ways of doing things, and they made lots of cool things like tools, artwork, and even homes out of the rocks and trees around them.

Recently, a big mining company wanted to do some work in the area near Juukan Gorge. The mining company thought they could find valuable things like iron ore there. But when they started doing the work, they accidentally destroyed two very important caves. These caves were very special to the Indigenous people and had been around for a very long time.

Many people were very upset when they found out what had happened, because the destruction of these caves meant that a big part of Indigenous history and culture had been lost. Some people said that the mining company should have known better and tried harder to protect the caves.

Many people are now working to make sure that something like this never happens again. They want to make sure that we all remember how important places like Juukan Gorge are to Indigenous people and that we treat them with respect.
