ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kalmar Union

A long time ago, three countries in northern Europe were called Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. They used to fight a lot with each other over who was the boss, and it wasn't very nice. But then, in the year 1397, they all decided to become friends and work together instead. They made an agreement called the Kalmar Union, which meant that they would have the same king and queen and share some things like money and laws.

It was kind of like when you and your friends share your toys and play together, even though you might have different favorites. Everyone was supposed to be happy and get along better now that they were all united. However, sometimes people still ended up fighting or not liking each other.

Eventually, after many years, the Kalmar Union didn't work out very well and the three countries decided to split up again and go their own ways. But for a while, it was a way for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden to try to be friends and work together.
