ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kelvin

Kelvin is a way of measuring temperature. Imagine that you have a really big thermometer (a thing that measures temperature) with a special kind of scale. Instead of saying how hot or cold something is in degrees like we do with Celsius and Fahrenheit, we measure it in Kelvins.

When something is really hot, like a burning fire or the sun, it has a lot of energy. The Kelvin scale starts at zero, which is the coldest possible temperature there is. It's called absolute zero, and there is no heat or energy at all. As things start to get hotter and hotter, they get more energy and the Kelvin numbers go up. This is because the Kelvin scale is based on the energy of particles, which are tiny things that make up everything around us.

So, to sum up, the Kelvin scale is a way to measure how much energy something has based on the temperature. The higher the Kelvin number, the more energy it has. And by knowing the Kelvin number, we can understand how hot or cold something is.
