ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kepler Mission

So, you know how we live on Earth? That's just one planet, right? Well, there are lots of other planets out there in space, too! But they're very, very far away and it's hard to see them.

The Kepler mission was a special task that some super-smart scientists gave to a special robot in space called the Kepler spacecraft. Its job was to look at a specific part of the sky for four years and watch for any planets that might be there.

The Kepler spacecraft had a really big eye that could see very far away. It was kind of like a camera, but it was way better! The Kepler mission wanted to find planets that were like Earth, with water and maybe even life on them.

So, the Kepler spacecraft took pictures of the same parts of the sky over and over again. Scientists studied all the pictures that it took, looking for tiny changes that might mean a planet was there.

And guess what? It worked! The Kepler mission found lots and lots of new planets that we had never seen before. Some were big, some were small, and some were just right, like Goldilocks' porridge. They even found some planets that were kind of like Earth and might have water on them!

Scientists used all the information that the Kepler spacecraft collected to learn more about the other planets out there in space. They hope to keep studying them to learn even more about what's going on in our universe. Cool, huh?
