ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kerr effect

Imagine you have a special toy that can change its color when you push it really hard. Now, let's imagine you put the toy in a big glass of water, and you look at it through the side of the glass. If you push the toy really hard again, you'll notice that the color change is a little different than it was before. This is kind of like what happens with the Kerr effect.

The Kerr effect is a science thing that happens when you shine a light through certain materials, like glass or crystals. When the light goes through the material, it can change depending on how much electricity is going through the material. This change is very small, but scientists can measure it with special tools.

The Kerr effect is important because it helps scientists understand how different materials work, and how they can be used to make things like computer chips and optical fibers for communication. By studying the Kerr effect, scientists can figure out how to make these materials better and more useful.
