ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Key signature

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen those little symbols at the beginning of a music sheet that look like sharps (#) or flats (b)? Those are called key signatures!

Think of it like a secret code that tells you which notes in the song are going to be higher or lower than usual.

For example, let's say we're playing a song in the key of G (which has one sharp in the key signature). That sharp symbol means that every time we see the note F, we'll actually play a higher note - F# instead.

This can get pretty important since the notes you're playing can affect the overall sound and feeling of the song. But don't worry, all you really need to do is pay attention to the key signature at the start of the sheet music and you'll know exactly which notes to play!
