Kholodets (dish)

Kholodets is a type of food that is made by cooking bones and meat in water for a long time until the liquid becomes gelatinous, which means it turns into a sort of jiggly, solid substance. This gelatinous liquid is then mixed with bits of meat and vegetables, like carrots and onions, and left to cool and solidify into a block or shape. It is often served cold and sliced, like a loaf or a meat jelly.

Imagine you and your mom making chicken soup. You put some chicken bones and meat in a pot with water and cook it for a long time until the liquid turns into soup. Now, instead of stopping there, you keep cooking it for even longer so that the liquid becomes a solid jelly. You then chop up some of the cooked chicken meat and mix it with some vegetables before pouring it into a container and letting it cool and solidify. After a while, you take out the container and slice it into pieces. That's what kholodets is!
