ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kidney failure

Kidneys are two organs in your body that help you get rid of waste and extra water by making pee. They also help your body balance important things like salt, potassium, and acidity. Kidney failure is when your kidneys stop working properly and can't clean your blood anymore.

If your kidneys fail, you might start feeling sick and tired all the time. You might have trouble peeing or have to pee a lot more than normal. You might even start swelling up or get a bad taste in your mouth.

There are lots of reasons why kidneys can fail. Some people are born with kidney problems, while others can get sick or have an injury that damages their kidneys. Sometimes, taking certain medicines or drinking too much alcohol can cause kidney failure too.

If you have kidney failure, you might need to get treatment right away. Doctors can sometimes help your kidneys get better by giving you medicine or doing a surgery. But sometimes, you might need to get a new kidney. That means a doctor will take a healthy kidney from someone else and put it into your body.

It's really important to take care of your kidneys so they don't fail. You can do this by drinking lots of water, eating healthy foods, and not taking too much medicine. If you ever have any problems with peeing or feel sick all the time, you should talk to a grown-up and go see a doctor.
