ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kleptomania

Kleptomania is when someone has a really strong urge to take things that don't belong to them. It's kind of like when you see cookies on the counter and you really want to eat one, even though you know you're not supposed to. But instead of cookies, people with kleptomania really want to take things like toys, candy, or even things from a store.

Now, everyone wants things sometimes that they can't have. But people with kleptomania feel like they can't control themselves. They might steal something even if they don't really want or need it, or even if they know they could get in trouble for it. It's like their brain is telling them they have to take the thing, no matter what.

It's important to know that people with kleptomania aren't doing this on purpose or trying to be bad. It's a real condition that they can't help. Sometimes they might even feel really guilty and ashamed about what they've done after they've taken something.

If someone you know has kleptomania, it's important to be understanding and try to help them get the help they need to control their urges and stop stealing things.
