ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Knowledge-based system

Imagine you are playing with your toys and you have a big box filled with different kinds of toys. You want to pick a toy to play with but you realize there are so many options that you can’t decide which one to choose.

A knowledge-based system is kind of like a very smart person helping you choose which toy to play with. This person knows a lot about toys and can ask you questions to figure out what you want to play with.

For example, if you say you want a toy that is soft and makes noise, the smart person might suggest a stuffed animal with a squeaker inside.

Similarly, a knowledge-based system uses computers instead of a person to help make decisions. It has a big database of information about a specific topic, like toys, and uses it to help people find what they’re looking for.

So, if you’re a grown-up asking a knowledge-based system for advice on car repairs, it would ask you questions about the problem you’re having and suggest solutions based on its knowledge of car repairs.

In summary, a knowledge-based system is like a very smart person helping you make decisions based on their knowledge of a specific topic, using computers instead of their brain.
