ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kohanim

Kohanim are special people in Jewish religion who come from the priestly tribe called the "Cohanim". They are descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

To better understand, let's imagine a big family tree. Moses and Aaron were brothers, and Aaron had four sons. Those four sons had their own children, and those children had their own children and so on. These people are all part of the Cohanim tribe and are called Kohanim.

Kohanim have a special role in Jewish life. They perform certain religious duties in the synagogue such as leading prayers and blessings. They also have special rules they need to follow, like not being allowed to marry a divorcee or be in the same room as a dead body.

One of the most important roles of the Kohanim was to serve in the Temple in Jerusalem, which was a special place where people went to worship. Kohanim were responsible for performing sacrifices and other religious rituals.

Today, there are still Kohanim in the world, but since the Temple was destroyed, they do not perform the same duties as they did in the past. However, they still hold a special place in the Jewish community and their role is recognized.
