ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kopp-Etchells effect

Okay, kiddo, so when there is a big bad storm in space, it can make electrons, which are tiny little particles, go wild and fly around really fast. This can cause those electrons to smash into other particles, like atoms and molecules, and knock some of them loose.

Now, imagine those loose particles flying everywhere and crashing into even more things, creating a big mess. Well, scientists call this mess the "kopp-etchells effect."

It's a fancy way of describing what happens when a storm in space causes all sorts of particles to collide and move around, creating a swirling, chaotic mess.

So, next time you see a big storm up in the night sky, remember that there's a lot more going on than just some pretty lights. There's a whole lot of craziness happening up there, and scientists are still trying to understand it all!
