ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kosher by ingredient

Kosher is a special way of preparing and eating food that some people practice as part of their religion. When we talk about "kosher by ingredient," it means that each individual ingredient in a food item has to be checked to make sure it is acceptable to eat according to Jewish dietary laws.

When someone is making or preparing food that needs to be kosher, they have to be very careful about what they use. Certain animals, like pigs, are not allowed to be eaten, so if any part of a pig is used in a recipe, the food cannot be kosher. Other animals, like cows and chickens, are allowed but they have to be slaughtered and prepared in a specific way.

Additionally, certain types of food are not allowed to be mixed together. For example, milk and meat products cannot be combined in the same meal. This means that if a recipe calls for cheese, it cannot be eaten with meat or any other dairy product.

To make sure that each ingredient is kosher, there are special certifications that products can receive. This means that someone has inspected the ingredients and determined that they meet all the requirements to be considered kosher.

People who follow kosher dietary laws believe that it is important to be mindful of what they eat and how it is prepared. They believe that by doing this, they are showing respect for their religion and tradition.
