Landfill gas migration

Okay kiddo, you know when you throw something in the trash, it goes to a big place called a landfill, right? Well, over time, the trash in the landfill can create a gas called landfill gas. But sometimes, that gas can escape from the landfill and move through the ground or even into nearby buildings.

That's called landfill gas migration. It happens because the gas wants to move to an area where there's less pressure, like a balloon that's been filled with air and is slowly losing air. The gas can also be dangerous because it has chemicals that can harm people and the environment, like methane, which is bad for the air we breathe.

So, people who manage landfills need to be careful to make sure the gas doesn't escape. They can do things like cover the landfill with soil or special materials to keep the gas from getting out. They can also use machines to collect the gas and turn it into electricity or use it for heating.

In short, landfill gas migration is when gas from a landfill moves out into the world, and we need to be careful to make sure it doesn't hurt anyone or anything.
