Language family

A language family is a group of languages that all have a common origin and share certain qualities. For example, English and French are part of the same language family — the Indo-European language family — because they both come from the same ancestor language and have similar words and grammar. Many language families are very large and have many different members, while other language families have only a few languages in them.
