ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Languages in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, there are lots of different languages that people speak. The most common language is English, which is the main language that everyone uses to talk to each other.

However, there are also other languages that people speak. For example, in Wales, some people speak Welsh, which is a language that is different from English. In Scotland, some people speak Scottish Gaelic, which is also a different language. In some parts of Northern Ireland, some people speak Irish Gaelic, which is another different language.

In some big cities in the UK, there are also lots of people who speak different languages from all around the world, because they have moved there from other countries. For example, in London, there are lots of people who speak languages like Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and Chinese.

Even though there are lots of different languages spoken in the United Kingdom, most people can still understand each other because they also speak English. So, even if someone speaks Welsh or Gaelic, they can still speak English to someone who only speaks English and they can understand each other.
