ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Latah

Latah is a condition where people react very quickly and suddenly to things that surprise or startle them. For example, if someone sneaks up behind them and says "Boo!" they might react by yelling or jumping.

It's kind of like a reflex - when a doctor hits your knee with a rubber hammer and your leg jumps up. But with latah, the reaction is much bigger and more complex.

Some people with latah also copy the actions of the person who startles them. So if someone suddenly jumps up and down while making a silly face, the person with latah might do the same thing without even thinking about it.

It's not exactly clear why latah happens, but it's thought to be related to how our brains process information. Some researchers think that people with latah are more easily influenced by their environment and the people around them.

Latah is most common in Southeast Asia, but it can happen in other parts of the world too. It's not a serious medical condition and doesn't usually need to be treated, but it can be a little embarrassing or annoying for people who have it.
