Lateral diffusion

Lateral diffusion is like when water spreads out over a dry surface. When something diffuses laterally, it means it is spreading out to the sides. For example, if you put a drop of food coloring in some water, it will slowly spread out to the sides of the container. That's lateral diffusion.
