ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Latin phrases

Latin phrases are like secret codes that grown-ups use to talk to each other. They are special words from a language that was spoken a very long time ago. You may hear them sometimes in movies or on TV, or even at school if your teacher uses them.

For example, "carpe diem" means "seize the day" and is a fancy way of saying to make the most of your time. "E pluribus unum" means "out of many, one" and is written on the back of the United States dollar bill. It means that even though we all come from different places, we are all part of one big country.

Sometimes, Latin phrases can be hard to understand because they use big words or sound like a different language. But, they can be really cool to know and can help you feel smart when you use them. Just remember, they are secret codes for grown-ups, so use them sparingly!
