ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lectin

Lectins are like little magnets that can stick to things in our bodies, especially in our digestive systems. They are found in many foods, but some people are sensitive to them and may experience discomfort after eating foods that contain high amounts of lectins. These lectins can bind to the lining of our digestive tract and cause irritation, leading to symptoms like gas, bloating and diarrhea. Some foods that are high in lectins include beans, lentils, tomatoes, potatoes and wheat. It's important to note that not all lectins are bad, some can actually have health benefits, like helping to fight off infections. It's always a good idea to speak with a doctor or a registered dietitian before making any significant changes to your diet.
