ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lens

Imagine you are playing with your magnifying glass and you notice that everything looks bigger or closer when you look through it. A lens is like a magnifying glass but it is made of special materials that bend and focus light to make things look clearer and closer.

Think of your eye as a camera, the lens in your eye works the same way as a camera lens, it bends and focuses light onto the back of your eye. When you look at something, light enters your eye and passes through the lens to help you see the object clearly.

There are many different types of lenses, some are thick in the middle and thin at the edges, while others are thin in the middle and thicker at the edges. The shape of the lens determines how light is reflected and refracted, which changes how objects appear when you look through them.

Some lenses are used in glasses or contact lenses to help people see better when they have trouble focusing their eyes. Other lenses are used in telescopes, microscopes, and cameras to help scientists and photographers see and capture images of things that are too small or too far away to see with the naked eye.

So, basically, lenses are like glasses for your eyes or camera, they help you see things clearer and closer by bending and focusing light.
