ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Liberty pole

Imagine you have a very special stick, that you like to wave around to show that you are free and not controlled by a boss or king. This special stick is called a Liberty Pole.

A long time ago, when America was still a young nation, people wanted to show that they were free and not under the rule of a king anymore. So, they made tall, wooden poles and put them up in public places to show that America was independent and had its own rules.

These Liberty Poles were very important symbols of freedom and people would have celebrations around them. Sometimes, they would even put a special flag called the "Liberty Cap" on top of the pole to show that they were proud to be free.

Even though we don't use Liberty Poles anymore, they are still an important part of American history and a symbol of the freedom and independence that our country was founded on.
