ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lies-to-children

Lies-to-children is when adults tell younger people things that are not exactly true, but still easy to understand for them. It's like if someone told you that the moon is made of cheese. You know it's not really made of cheese, but it helps you understand the concept of what the moon might look like.

When adults explain things to children, they sometimes need to simplify things to make it easier for them to understand. They might bend the truth a little bit, but they do it to help the kids get the idea.

This doesn't mean that adults should always lie to children. It's important to eventually teach them the real facts, but sometimes it's just easier to use a simpler explanation.
