ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lignite

Lignite is a type of rock that people use to make energy. It's a lot like coal, which is another type of rock people use for energy. But lignite is a little bit different, because it hasn't been around as long as coal. When plants and trees die, they turn into something called "organic material." Over a really, really long time, that material can turn into coal. But lignite is made from younger plants and trees, so it's not as old as coal.

People mine lignite out of the ground, just like they do with coal. Then they burn it to make energy. But there are some problems with burning lignite. One problem is that it's not as efficient as coal. That means you can't get as much energy out of it for the same amount of work. Also, when you burn lignite, it releases a lot of pollution into the air. This can be bad for the environment and for people's health.

So even though lignite is a type of rock we can use for energy, it's not always the best choice. There are other ways to make energy that are cleaner and more efficient. But lignite is still an important resource for some parts of the world, and it can help us keep the lights on and power our homes and businesses.
