ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Linguistic interference

Imagine you are playing with two different sets of toys - one set is for building tall towers and the other set is for making cool cars. When you mix up the toys from the two sets, you might end up with a tower that has wheels or a car with building blocks sticking out of it. This is similar to what happens with our languages.

Linguistic interference is when the different languages you know mix together and affects how you speak or write. For example, if someone speaks both English and Spanish, they may accidentally use a Spanish word while speaking in English because their brain is thinking in both languages. This can sometimes create confusion or make it harder for others to understand what is being said.

To help keep the languages separate, it is important to practice speaking and writing in each language separately and try to avoid switching back and forth too often. Additionally, learning new words and phrases in each language can also help to differentiate them.
