ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Load-bearing wall

A load-bearing wall is like the backbone of your house. It's a strong wall that carries the weight of the roof or upper floors and transfers it down to the foundation of the house.

Think of it like a bridge. Just like how the pillars of a bridge support the weight of the cars and trucks driving over it, a load-bearing wall supports the weight of your home above it.

If you were to take out a load-bearing wall without adding a beam or columns to support the weight, your house could collapse like a tower of blocks. So, it's very important to know which walls in your home are load-bearing before making any changes or renovations.
