ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lofting

Lofting is when you want to make something like a boat or a plane, but it’s really big and hard to make all at once. So, instead of making the whole thing at one time, you draw it out on paper in little pieces called “profiles”.

Each profile is like a slice or a cross-section of the thing you’re making, almost like if you cut it up into little pieces like a puzzle. Then you take all those profiles and put them together like you’re building a model, but bigger.

You might use special computer programs to help you do all this or you might do it by hand. The end result is that you get a set of plans or instructions that tell you how to put all the pieces together to make your big thing like a boat or a plane.
