ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Longitudinal wave

Longitudinal waves are like a slinky-wave you can make when you roll it up and down. It's a type of wave that travels through an object or material and it can carry energy and sound. When the slinky-wave moves up and down and sideways it causes vibrations, like when you hear a sound, like music, or someone shouting. The vibrations travel along the slinky and when they reach your ears they make the sound you hear.
